As I discovered the relationship between Riccar and Bernina (see my post on Bernina 1230), I could now tell the resemblance between Riccar 888 and Bernina Record 830. I now use Bernina 1230 (Riccar badge)as my main machine and it has been doing great, but can't dispute the reliability of all metal, mechanical machines. Just stumbled onto your site.

It has all the original cams and accessories, all stored in the original carry case. It has travelled North America and it served me well. I have always sewn my own clothes and some for others. As a professional dancer I became involved in costume design and creation for various companies I worked with.
In 1988, I received a design degree from the Fashion Institute of Design in NYC, and my professors and a professional sewing machine repairman said, “The commercial industry doesn’t make them this sturdy anymore. Keep this machine.”
One older sewing machine mechanic said that a solid metal machine like the Riccar will always be a reliable machine when will always be reliable when we’ll maintained.

Fast forward to 2021, and I mainly use an industrial Juki straight stitch picked up from a sample hand in NYC and a Reliable industrial 3/4 thread serger. Buttonholes and zig-zag are created on an early model digital Bernina purchased 1993.

But my Riccar is still with me.
Although I have not used it in more than 10 years, it has been safely stored in its original case in a dry closet in my home. I am about to plug it in and give it a chance to return to use, for my step daughter who is learning to sew.
I am missing the original manual only.
Any ideas or information on your Riccar 888 sewing experience is welcome!
(Unknown poster above: I will check on my cams and see if they are the same ones you have.)
TamaraZeldaBluhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06518348829650131567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5632951607239985790.post-11452537898995152002021-02-23T21:13:20.182-08:002021-02-23T21:13:20.182-08:00can be printed on a 3D printercan be printed on a 3D printerDimahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08760367982233438361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5632951607239985790.post-85251331150404372912020-09-15T19:07:31.189-07:002020-09-15T19:07:31.189-07:00Does your machine sew straight stitch without any ...Does your machine sew straight stitch without any cam in? I am pretty stoked and it seems to run well. I am confused though because when I look at the Riccar 888 user manual, there is often mention of the "master cam" or "cam no. 1" which I do not have. It doesn't seem like I am missing any cams though as I have a full set of 24. Does cam no. 1 just not exist? It is referenced in the manual when explaining how to manual zig zag and in other places. There is very little info out there about this machine. It would be great if someone could give me some info regarding cam no. 1. Since it sews just fine without the noise on high speed setting, I haven't paid much attention to where the noise is coming from when it runs on low speed. (I just immediately stopped the machine, and switched it back to the high speed setting.) I think I will run it at low speed setting to see where the noise is coming from, and see if I can do something about it. The machine has been oiled well. Being an old machine, hadn't been used for years, it may need even more oil. I shall feed it more.UrbanRecyclist Micki Shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15031477249140126474noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5632951607239985790.post-4171555483782491572013-12-02T08:25:40.215-08:002013-12-02T08:25:40.215-08:00Thanks, Michelle, for the suggestion. When you sa...Thanks, Michelle, for the suggestion. When you say "lubrication", is that other than the usual oiling of all metal-to-metal parts? (I sometimes read others apply "grease" to some sewing machine parts, but I've never used any grease.) I did open up the top and the bottom and thoroughly cleaned and oiled the machine before I began sewing. But I am too intimidated to do anything with the motor itself, so I didn't do anything with the motor. I would say that the current "high" setting is a comfortably "high" speed and the foot pedal responds very well and lets me control the speed well. Because of the noise, I haven't set it "low" to sew much. I don't know how slow the "slow" setting is. I will run it at the high speed setting for a while to attempt to clean out the brushes. I don't necessarily need the machine to run any faster, in fact it is probably running at the speed it's supposed to be, but I am interested in the noise being gone. It is curious (to me) that the noise is only when it's at the low speed setting. Any idea why this may be the case? Oh, yes. Many don't realize how damp garages can be. When I discovered rusted paper clips in a filing box that got stored in the garage for several years, that was the last time I put anything that is prone to moisture/rust in the garage.UrbanRecyclist Micki Shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15031477249140126474noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5632951607239985790.post-51973693154770034832013-12-02T05:10:39.909-08:002013-12-02T05:10:39.909-08:00That looks like a very nice machine. You could also put it in bobbin winding mode and just step on the foot control and run it for awhile at the highest speed you can. That might clean out the brushes and it might go faster. There is probably gummed up oil inside that could be softened. Make sure you don't store it anywhere cold or damp. A friend just told me she has a sewing machine in her dad's garage. I cringed. Moisture equals rust, people....that's what I wanted to tell her. Thanks for showing us your machine. It looks like a nice one!Michellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11994575359990994574noreply@blogger.com
